Wroxall man is first winner of IW Chess Knockout Shield

By Chris Cornford Feb 15, 2021

John Wrench of Wroxall is the first winner at chess of the Isle of Wight Knockout Shield after sealing victory in a close match with the black pieces, beating Neil Pither in the Final.

Sixteen Isle of Wight chess players had signed up to the tournament before the 2020 first lockdown, after which a conclusion looked unlikely. However it was decided that moving online would enable a winner to emerge and entrants were able to complete the competition by playing the last two rounds online.
A shield for the event was donated by the Red Squirrel Property Shop.

The Island’s chess players are now invited to enter the 2021 competition, keeping in mind that games will need to be played online for the foreseeable future. Email j.wrench11@gmail.com for more details or call 07913 227 402. There is no charge for taking part.
