STAR LETTER: The poverty gap grows

Dear Editor,

Everything the Conservatives say, we can confidently believe the opposite is true. Remember Boris Johnson standing on the steps of No. 10 Downing Street proclaiming we are going to fix social care? It’s in a worse state than ever.

Then there’s the 20,000 new police officers. Forget the lies, there’s only 4,000, and no talk about the 20,000 experienced police officers they previously got rid of. When they talk about levelling up, you know it’s just spin and cover whilst they use every opportunity to plunder the Treasury, dividing up the spoils with handouts to their VIP donor friends.

The truth is there has never been a more rapidly growing gap between the uber-rich and the poor. As for the NonDom status, billionaires could choose to pay £35,000 in tax, but it’s been changed to a system where new NonDoms pay absolutely nothing for the first four years. What about the 2 per cent reduction in National Insurance? Weren’t NI contributions meant to fund our NHS? Now there’s talk of making yet more ‘efficiency savings’ – shorthand for ‘cuts’. Welcome to austerity 2.0. And of course, who is going to pay? You guessed, it will be the poorest, the long-term sick who will be bullied off benefits.
Britain in 2024. When the General Election comes around, will we all be holding out our bowl, asking, “Please Sir, can I have some more?”
