Short stories, big heart as book backs Mountbatten

Jan Wright and Fran Ladd

A collection of feel good Island stories by local author Jan Wright has already raised more than £1,200 for Mountbatten, the Island’s only hospice.

A Different Way of Life is a compilation of 20 short stories inspired by life on the Island from Cowes Week to festival season, and the adventures of “overners” making a new home. The stories are light hearted and romantic, with broad appeal, and all profits go directly to Mountbatten IW.

Jan, who ran Wright Estate Agency with her husband, Phil, began writing fiction in the 1990s. She said: “I’ve always enjoyed creating little worlds through short stories. It’s very satisfying to see a complete story come together.”

Her motivation for publishing this collection was deeply personal. “Mountbatten made a difficult time a little easier when a close friend received care there,” she said. “This is my way of giving something back.”
Jan was also inspired after helping a friend publish a poetry book for charity and decided to use her own work to support Mountbatten’s vital services.
Priced at £6, the book is available from Mountbatten shops, Medina Bookshop in Cowes, Godsill
