No Grinch for Ventnor

A lack of volunteers, venues and funds mean that the festive Ventnorville event has been cancelled this year. The Christmas themed event designed to bring visitors to the town, has laid on a variety of entertainments over the past five years including a lantern parade, Carol singing in the Park, dog fancy dress, a Santa dash on the beach and visits by Santa and the Grinch.

A statement on social media by the non-profit making Ventnorville team said they were disappointed that it would not take place this year. The statement explained: “There have been various planning and financial challenges to overcome — securing a venue for the craft fair, significant increases in hiring certain venues, the road closure fees for the Winter Carnival and Lantern Parade and general increasing costs.

“These together with a real lack of manpower in helping organise the event has brought us to this decision.

“Sadly, there is no funding available for the lantern workshops or a free venue to store the lanterns while they are being made.”

They said they could not risk operating at a loss, but are hopeful that with more fundraising and active volunteers they could bring the event back for 2020.
