Midsummer Madness for quilters

By Press Release Aug 30, 2021

A group of quilters took part in an evening of ‘Midsummer Madness’ to help raise £500 for the Wessex Cancer Trust’s Daisy Bus.

The all-night quilting workshop had been running since 2019 but for the last two years has been conducted via Zoom.

Organiser, Gill Hughes, explained: “There were 10 of us this year with most from the Vectis Quilters who meet up on the second Tuesday of each month in the Parish Hall, Town Lane, Newport. However, this year we had someone who formerly lived on the Island taking part on Zoom from the Mainland, so the word is spreading.

“We always start around 8pm on the nearest Friday to Midsummer’s Day and finish around 8am sewing through the night. We first did it in Rookley Village Hall and were all in our PJs. I remember standing on the veranda at 3am with tea and cake and watching the sun rise.
“It was going to be a one-off event, but everyone was keen to continue. Obviously, the last couple of years we have not been able to get together, but have carried on with a different charity each year.

“All the quilts are different and very colourful and we’re supported by friends and family with sponsorship.”

Some of the ladies presented their £500 cheque this week to the Wessex Cancer Trust while displaying their quilts.
