An Island student has been selected to become the face of the 2023 undergraduate recruitment campaign for Winchester University.

Ellen Wood was born in Cowes and spent her childhood in Northwood where she attended both Northwood Primary School and subsequently went on to Cowes Enterprise College. After successfully completing her A-Levels, Ellen decided to embark on a BA (Hons) Degree in Childhood Studies, and is currently in her final year at Winchester University and hoping to study for a postgraduate master’s degree.

As well as being the face of the campaign, the university subsequently commissioned Surrey-based artist, Emma-Leone Palmer, to paint a large portrait of Ellen. This image is now featured on the front cover of the 2023 prospectus, with the tag line ‘The University of Winchester – The Place to Become’.

The image is also being used on various forms of advertising for the university and forms the backdrop for UCAS events and university open days.

The university’s extensive nationwide advertising campaign has brought Ellen’s image home to the Island on Southern Vectis buses, as well as across the country on city bus fleets and in national railway stations.

The original canvas portrait, named ‘Become’, was officially unveiled at the university recently, with both Ellen and the artist in attendance, alongside members of staff from the university, including the Vice- Chancellor.
