Four of the Island’s best known pubs have teamed up to support the Island’s traditional carnivals, by sponsoring this year’s Spirit of Carnival awards.
The Bargeman’s Rest, The Spyglass Inn, The Steamer Inn, and The Dairyman’s Daughter, are all backing the initiative, which recognises creativity, effort and community spirit at carnivals in Newport, Ryde, Sandown and Ventnor.
Founded in 2017 by Neil, Andrew and Jane Gibbs, the Spirit of Carnival award aims to encourage participation, particularly from those taking part for the first time. Prizes include certificates and cash awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place entries at each event.
Andrew and Jane Gibbs, who sponsor the Ryde, Newport and Sandown awards, said they were passionate about celebrating the Island’s vibrant carnival tradition.
“We’ve been proudly supporting local carnivals since 2017,” said Andrew. “Every year, we’re blown away by the creativity and resourcefulness on display. It’s always a joy to see the community come together.”
Jane added: “We warmly encourage more local businesses to join in and support
this brilliant cultural tradition.”
The Gibbs family actively participate each year, most notably with The Spyglass Inn’s iconic pirate ship float, which is a regular at Ventnor Carnival.
