Get checked out for bowel cancer

By Press Release Apr 28, 2023

A bowel cancer awareness day was organised by a survivor of the disease at Morrisons, Lake, on Saturday.

Deborah Root, 63, of Whitwell, dressed in a ‘poo suit’ at a stall in the supermarket where she works.

She was diagnosed with the disease two years ago and, following an operation, is currently in remission but is under constant supervision. Deborah said: “The day was inspired by Dame Deborah James, who sadly died from the disease after raising £3 million for her ‘Bowelbabe’ charity.

“April is ‘Bowel Cancer Awareness Month’, so I wanted to hold it now, it was all about talking to people and getting the information across.

“The statistics are terrible; it can affect one in two people. When I was first diagnosed, I realised I had a couple of symptoms and so I got an examination. This is all about getting people to talk about their poo and getting your body checked out.

“The day itself was a big success and I got a lot of hugs from people. I handed out lots of leaflets to men as well as women – although some of the children were a bit bemused to find out I was dressed as poo!”
