Stay in a ‘skoolie’

By Press Release Apr 28, 2023

Retro Staycations, near Ryde, which rents out vintage Airstream trailers to holidaymakers, has taken delivery of a converted American school bus, Freshly retired from the highways of Houston, the split-screen bus – known affectionately as a ‘skoolie’ by all US schoolchildren – and now named Texas, is the only one of its kind on the Island.

Texas once carried 71 children to and from school each day, but has now been converted into a cozy living space with a fully-equipped kitchen, shower, wood-burning stove and space to comfortably sleep six. The interior has a retro theme, complete with rustic furnishings that harken back to a bygone era. With the original cab, driver’s seat and steering wheel still in place, youngsters can travel wherever their imagination takes them, while their parents relax in the living accommodation behind them.

“We are so excited to be offering this unique accommodation option to our guests,” said Retro Staycations’ co-owner, Sarah Moss. “The American school bus is an iconic symbol of American culture, and we are thrilled to have one here on the Island alongside our fleet of original silver bullet American Airstream caravans – the coolest caravans in the world!”
