Drizzling derby drama delivers a daring decider in football

Bembridge A keeper, Chris Page, clears Newchurch attack

With a further weekend of rain-affected fixtures, there were bruising battles in the Island leagues. There were red cards, and a broken cheek-bone at Watcombe Bottom, clinical cup successes for Northwood and Osborne Coburg, and Wessex wins for Vics and Newport.

IW Leagues

In Division One, Vectis’s 3-2 win away at Cowes Sports Res sees them climb to third, with goals from Jamie Barratt, Ben Cutts and Joe Houghton. Cowes scorers were James Turner and Dan Pearson.

Ventnor’s victory at home, inspired by a player-of-the-match performance from Freddie Knowles, to neighbours Shanklin, combined scything tackles on a slippery surface, with moments of magic including their decisive third goal. Ventnor skipper, Emerson Tattersall, scored twice and broke his cheek-bone late in the match. Jack Barsdell scored the daringly decisive third Ventnor goal, when Shanklin keeper, Sean Phillips, cleared the ball 30 yards to see it immediately returned over his head. Sub, Robert Gee, got the fourth near full time. Shanklin’s scorers were Cory Sanderson and Fraser Lloyd. Ref Peter Cotton had to send Charlie Urry off for foul play, with Shanklin’s Ben Gregory also red-carded. He also yellow-carded Blaise Franklin in an often over-physical encounter in difficult conditions.

In Division Two, Wootton are joint leaders with Osborne Coburg, after emphatically winning 9-0 at home to Seaview. There were two goals apiece from Harris Payne, James Cheek and Scott Barron, and one each for Harry Collier, Dave Renouf and James Gunningham.

In Combination Two, Tyler Randle, Robbie Woodford, Bobbie Wye and sub Brad Wagstaff scored for leaders Bembridge A, with experienced Chris Page in goal.
