Newport has suffered another High Street blow with news that Brighthouse is set to close its Isle of Wight store, along wih 30 others across the country.
The closure comes just three years after it first opened its doors, and the rent-to-own shop on the corner of the High Street and St James’ Street will probably close for good, leaving the 3,000 sq ft former Dorothy Perkins store empty.
Brighthouse has received a somewhat cold reception on the Island since opening on March 31, 2016. The company uses a weekly finance plan to sell household goods, often making customers pay back a considerable amount more than the original product price.
A Brighthouse spokesperson claims they are working to redeploy as many of their employees as possible in alternative roles, but that there will inevitably be redundancies.
The company hopes to speak to all customers affected by the store closures and either transfer them to another local store or serve them online. A PayPoint system has been introduced, allowing customers to pay BrightHouse in cash at 28,000 locations.
