All public toilets in Ryde are to be closed at dusk each evening after up to £10,000 of damage was caused to the Appley conveniences over the weekend.

Cubicles were destroyed, doors broken and toilet roll holders ripped off and thrown across the floor.

Cllr Karen Luciani said: “It is just crazy; I despair. Now we have decided to close all town toilets at dusk; obviously, the times will change as the nights lighten.

“The cost of repairs for this sort of vandalism comes out of our council tax and affects everyone. We are having the damage estimated, but, depending on how much has been done, it could cost up to £10,000. This is going to be a big job and there is no chance of the work being completed in the near future, so they will be closed for the time being.

“Police are involved, and anyone who visited the toilets over the weekend can contact us to help with the time-frame of when they were vandalised.”
