Officers from Hampshire Constabulary were called by staff at Newport Post Office, following the discovery of a suspect package that is understood to have either have smelt of or contained cannabis.
Police were alerted by staff at just after 2.30 pm on Tuesday afternoon. Officers attended and carried out a search of a package behind the counter under the supervision of staff, but apparently left the post office counter without the package in question.
Post Office staff have refused to comment further. Hampshire Police have been approached to comment further.
