Ryde Croquet Club hosted two tournaments last week, a B Series competition (for players with handicaps between 3 and 6), and a C Series competition (for players with handicaps of 7 and above).
The B Series competition was contested by 16 players, 11 travelling from the mainland. The tournament was contested in four blocks of four, with the best two, in each block, progressing to the quarter-finals. The final saw Andy Jones, from Phyllis Court in Henley, winning against Marian Manning, from Colchester. Ryde players, Debra Hayns and Nick Westmore, reached the semi-finals.
Andy Jones now proceeds to the national B Level final, but Ryde players will have other chances to qualify. The C Level competition was also contested by 16 players and, in a well-contested final, Ron Gould, from Ryde, beat Hilary Bird, of Guildford, 7-5. Ron will now represent the Ryde Croquet Club in the national C Level final in the autumn.
The Plate Competition was won by Steve Hayns, of Ryde, in a tight finish against Berine Phillips, of Guildford.
