Shalfleet Primary’s ‘Dash in the Dark’ raises money for charity

Pupils presenting a cheque for £900 to Sight for Wight

Shalfleet School’s Year 4 class has raised £950 for its charity, Wight Sense, following a mini ‘Dash in the Dark’.

They expressed interest in the dash after two teachers, Paula Blackley and Rita Blackburn, took part in the main Island event last October.

A route of 250 metres was laid out around the school grounds, with the children calling out their names to a teacher each time they passed the finish line to have their number of laps recorded.

The children were expected to complete 10 laps each in order to run or walk 2.5 km; however, this didn’t quite happen.

A total of 22 children, supported and encouraged by their parents, took part together with one adult. The children continued with their laps and had to be stopped after an hour, with some of them completing more than 20 laps. In total the class ran 53,050 metres.

CEO of Wight Sense, Lisa Holyhead, was delighted with the hard work the children had put into raising the money. She explained that the money they had raised would be used to purchase Alexa smart speakers for people who live alone and are partially blind.

They will help people to contact friends and undertake simple tasks, such as turning on lights and closing curtains.

The pupils were presented with medals for all their effort.
