A schoolgirl has allegedly snatched a woman’s purse from her shopping trolley at Newport’s Asda.

The incident is said to have taken place at between 12pm and 1pm on Monday (November 26) in the car park.

The victim claims the schoolgirl was wearing a Ryde Academy uniform, and was quick to run off with the purse before she could be caught up to.

The victim has also said the police have CCTV footage of the incident and are also looking into the issue of the child being out of school in the middle of the day.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: “The incident is reported to have occurred between 12pm and 12.20pm yesterday in the Asda car park in St George’s Way, Newport.

“The 22-year-old victim had been shopping and took her trolley back to the bay and returned to her car. She then realised she had left her purse in the trolley.

“She then saw a young girl in school uniform take the purse out of the trolley and head into the store.

“She believed the girl was going to hand the purse in but when she checked with staff, nothing had been handed in.

“The girl is described as aged around 14, with dark hair in a ponytail and wearing black trousers and a grey top – believed to be school uniform.”
