Roscoe rescues resilient Ryde in this week’s cricket

Ryde secured nail-biting success at home to Alton, with mixed results for the other senior sides, with bowlers dominant in Island Cup matches.

Southern Premier and Hampshire Leagues

Ventnor lost by 35 runs away to Waterlooville in Premier Division One, with the Islanders fielding first and Dan Cox (3-36) and George Watts (2-43) limiting the home side to 214-9. In reply, opener, Sam Guerin (64), and wickie, Sam Mills (63), shared a 79-run partnership, but the tail failed to wag and Ventnor held on to finish 179-9 off 50 overs to claim 7 points.

In Hants Division One, Ryde won by a single wicket in a cliff-hanger at home to Alton. The visitors were limited to 158 all out, with Tom Durman taking 4-30 and Ben Gregory and Kerry Rice taking 2 wickets each. Ryde lost early wickets, but Tom Roscoe’s 41, Durman’s 35 and Jack Summers 21, enabled skipper, Ash Goldsmith (17), and Nathan Day (1), to remain unbeaten as Ryde reached 159-9 in the 42 over.

Division Three leaders, Ventnor 2nd XI, won by 8 wickets at home to Waterlooville 2nd XI, bowling out the visitors for 129 in the 34th over, with 2 wickets apiece for Hugh and Charlie Calloway, Sam Read and Charlie Turpin. Ventnor’s Martin Blackman (69) and Neil Westhorpe (26) shared a matching-winning unbroken partnership of 47, as the Islanders reached their target for the loss of 2 wickets.

Shanklin & Godshill lost by 50 runs at home to Totton and Eling, with the visitors all out for 238. Nathan Moore took 3-34, with 2 each for Matt Lambourne, Andy White and son, Jack White. Wickie, Sean Phillips, took 2 catches. In reply, the Island side saw wickets fall at regular intervals, with skipper, Ben White, hitting 41 and Harry Moore adding 31, for Shanklin to be all out for 188 in the 44th over.

In Division Four, Ryde 2nd XI lost by 97 runs away at Southampton Tuskers, who were all out for 188, with Jibin Mathew taking 3-42 and Jerin Jose 2-28. Ryde’s first three batters scored ducks, with skipper, Simon Berendt, top scoring with an unbeaten 19.

Island Cups

In the Senior Cup, Newport won by 6 wickets at home to Northwood, with the visitors scoring 179-8 off 40 overs. Kevin Cooper hit 43 and Chris Williams 31, with Ash Brett taking 3-33, and 2 wickets apiece for Olly Pease and Adam Wilson.

In reply, Newport’s Thomas Dye scored an unbeaten 69, supported by Louis Payne’s 42 and Adam Wilson’s 31 not out, reached 180 in the 35th over for the loss of 4 wickets, including Gary Cooper’s run out of Payne.

At Arreton, Ventnor 3rd XI won by 177 runs at home to Shanklin 2nd XI, scoring 255-6 with opener, Tom Stafford, hitting a boundary-filled 60, skipper Jake Toulson adding 53 and Nick Dobson 27 unbeaten at the close, with Kevin Williams taking 4-37.

A youthful Shanklin side struggled to reach 79 all out, with captain, Steve Priddle, scoring 15, Adam Priest 14, and 2 wickets each for Souvak Sanyal, Kayton Evans, Wilf Sutton and Aston Langdon.

Shanklin & Godshill 3rd XI lost by 8 wickets to Cowes in the Fred Winter Cup, with Shanklin scoring 53 all out in the 33rd over, with the square leg umpire giving the 3rd wicket out. Cowes reached their target for 2 wickets in the 8th over.

Newport 2nd XI won by 43 runs away at Northwood 2nd XI, with Newport scoring 152-7, including an unbeaten 80 from opener, James Haydon. Skipper/wicket-keeper Steven Steinmetz added 26, and David Chapman took 3-34. In reply, Northwood openers, Jeff Barrett (32) and William Jennings (21), laid solid foundations, but a steady fall of wickets, with Alfie Pease taking 3-28, saw Northwood all out for 109 in the 28th over.


Tomorrow (Saturday), Ventnor welcome Calmore Sports and Ryde travel to Basingstoke & North Hants. Ventnor 2nd XI visit Gosport and Shanklin & Godshill are away at Waterlooville, with Ryde 2nd XI home to Fareham & Crofton.

On the Island, in Division One, Freshwater welcome Ventnor 3rd XI, Northwood host St Helens, and Shanklin 2nd XI entertain leaders Newport. Newport’s 2nd XI are home to Northwood 2nd XI and Ventnor 4th XI host Shanklin 3rd XI.
