A Yarmouth RNLI volunteer represented the Island at a two-day Women in Research & Rescue Conference, at the charity’s headquarters in Poole on Thursday and Friday of last week.

Katie Ould, the Yarmouth launch authority volunteer, took part in the event, which was timed perfectly for International Women’s Day on Friday.

Katie said: “There were around 30 women volunteers from lifeboat stations across the UK who took part, with quite a few coming down from Scotland.

“We were able to go out on the sea on a lifeboat, and there a variety of talks from successful women in industry, who spoke about their jobs, which was incredibly moving.

“One was Commodore Catherine Jordan LVO, of the Royal Navy, who was so humble when she talked about her life story, it was truly inspirational.”

International Women’s Day was a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It coincided with the 200th anniversary of the RNLI and the event certainly inspired Katie, who added: “I joined Yarmouth RNLI as the launch authority but I am now training to be a crew member – it’s a lot more fun!”
