Raffle raises money to help IW charities

Newport teenager Macie Edkins-Wherry has been raising funds for charity to bring goodwill to nursing homes and food projects.

Macie, 17, a student at IW Sixth Form College, has spent the last few years raising funds and spending her own money from her paper delivery job to distribute Christmas presents and Easter eggs. Aided by her mother, Dana, they hold seasonal raffles and all the money raised is distributed to a variety of Island charities.

Dana said: “This year we have raised £2,855, which will be split between a number of Isle of Wight charities.

“For this raffle we had a record 68 prizes, and we cannot thank the businesses and our friends enough. We could not do it without everyone; it’s great teamwork by all to help raise funds and awareness for the wonderful charities that do so much for our community.

“Macie is a ray of sunshine and always likes to help when she can. There are other children who also do lovely charitable things and it makes our Island a better place.

“This time all the care-homes residents got an Easter egg or treat, not just the residents without any family. The gifting does not come from any fund-raising, but from Macie’s own money, and family and friends, who also buy eggs to support her.”
