Meeting about future of the Winter Gardens

The owners of Ventnor Winter Gardens have told County Hall they would like to sell the building, an Isle of Wight councillor has said.

Ventnor & St Lawrence representative, Cllr Ed Blake, announced that the community now has “six months to put forward a proposed bidder” for the iconic Art Deco–style building.

Working with local resident, Steve Witheyman, of the Save Ventnor Winter Gardens Action Group, the county councillor said a public meeting will be organised “as soon as possible” to “discuss next steps.”

The meeting is set to take place at Salisbury Gardens on Tuesday (October 14) at 6pm.

Cllr Blake said: “On Tuesday, what I propose is … first of all we set out the process in which we as a community would like to view bids coming in.

“Do we want to produce a list of a few approved bidders, every scheme that we think would be acceptable to the community moving forward?

“Or do we want to select out two or three of them, one of them? Basically, decide how as a community we want to proceed, whether that’s through a selection panel or a vote.

“That needs to happen pretty quickly.”
