A 10-year-old Lake schoolgirl has had her ‘first major hair chop’, raising more than £500 for Breast Cancer Now, and The Little Princess Trust which charity provides free, real hair wigs to children, who have lost their own hair due to cancer treatment or alopecia.

Maizie Debenham, who attends the local Broadlea Primary School, said afterwards: “My new hair is amazing. I love how it feels; I look more grown up.”

Maizie had her 18-inch hair cut by Julie, at Wallis 25 Hair Studio in Sandown High Street, on Saturday. Among those supporting her were Sandown mayor, Alex Lightfoot, Cllr Ian Ward, Sarah Tyrell from Breast Cancer Now, and Mark Birch of Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat.

Sarah added: “Maizie was so cool during the cut and took it all calmly. Now she is excited to hear back from the Little Princess Trust when they receive her hair.

“Maizie was already booking her next hair cut with Julie. Maizie urges more young people to do the charity haircut, not only as it’s fun, she says, but you fund-raise for a great charity.”
