Two men appeared in Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, following incidents on the Island of theft and the use of stolen bank cards.

Items, including a bank card, belonging to Ventnor footballers were stolen from Shanklin FC, on Saturday (January 20), and a rucksack, which contained a bank card, was taken from All Saints’ Church, in Ryde, on December 23, 2023.

Kevin Greenwood, 44, of West Street, Ryde, pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation in relation to the football club theft. He also admitted burglary and false representation at Premier Stores in Ryde and Lake, Tesco Express, Lake and the Co-op, in Ryde, all on December 23. He was bailed to return to the IW Magistrates’ Court on March 8 for sentencing, with an electronically monitored daily curfew between 6pm and 6am.

Gavin Buggs, 43, of Barton Road, Newport, was charged with fraud by false representation relating to the use of a bank card on January 20. He pleaded guilty, was fined £80, and ordered to pay £47.55 compensation.

During Saturday’s theft, four players reported items stolen, some of which were subsequently recovered. A silver bangle – which contained the ashes and a lock of hair from a player’s late father – and a ring have not been found.
