Goals galore for football in Cups and League

Brading scorer Dan Vale closes down Cowes defence

A frosty weekend saw a classic cup win for East Cowes Sports in Hampshire. Whitecroft & Barton edged through on penalties in the Gold Cup, and there was a hat-trick for Bembridge’s Finn Smith. West Wight reclaimed the top-spot in Division One, and Vics played 100 minutes to draw 4-all in Wessex.

Hants & IW Cups

W&B beat Shanklin on penalties after a pulsating 4-4 draw, in the quarter-final of the IW Gold Cup. First-half goals, from Fin Kalaker and Sam Cant, saw W&B leading 2-1 at the break, and sub, Dan Pearson, added 2 second-half goals. Shanklin’s strikes came from Rory Day’s first-half penalty, Zain White, Lewis Parsons, and a Jamie Trowbridge free kick.

In a tense shoot-out, W&B edged ahead 7-6 to progress to the semi-finals, with keeper, Joe Willams, saving 2 spot kicks and calmly scoring the winner.

Bembridge & Vectis reached the third round of the Memorial Cup after winning 6-3 away at Oakfield, including a hat-trick from sub, Finn Smith, two from Michael Brown, and one from Sam Kirby.

Binstead COB beat West Wight Reserves in the second round of the Junior A Cup, at the Molehill, with midfielder, Cam O’Rourke, opening the scoring with a 30 yard free kick. Liam Lock found Ash Smith to extend the first-half lead. After the break, Lock made it 3-0, and Cam O’Rourke scored his second with a header, with James Milligan awarded player of the match.

Niton won 3-1 away at Newchurch, also in the Junior A, with first half strikes from Jack Barsdell and Sam Hatton (2), with the consolation goal from veteran, Keith Rust.

Brading Town Res won their cup match, 4-0 away at Osborne Coburg Res, with goals from Adam Cantelo, Tim Shaw (2), and Alex Hatton.

Two goals each from Jake Cook and Roland Bryan Snr, and 1 from Roland Bryan Jnr, saw East Cowes Sports Res win 5-2 away at Bembridge & Vectis Res, who scored through Bobbie Wye and sub, Harry Faulkner, with Ryan Evemy outstanding.

Player-of-the-match Boyd Jardine, inspired East Cowes Sports to celebrate a 3-1 away win at Bournemouth Electric in the Hants Vase, with a first-half goal from Seb Darlaston-Jones. Joe Crabb and Callum Fryer ensured the win after the break and the Islanders have reached the quarter finals.

High Park lost 5-1 away at AW Jeffreys.

IW Leagues One and Two, and Combination One

Division One saw Cahrlie Butt, and an own goal, secure Northwood’s 2-1 win at home to Osborne Coburg, with a consolation goal from Brad Kenning in the first half, and Kurt Butt named player-of-the-match.

West Wight scored twice in each half, at home, to beat High Park 4-0, with Ash Brett, Gareth Bricknell, and Brad Thomas (2), securing the points for West Wight. West Wight are now ahead of W&B at the top of the table on goal difference.

In Division Two, leaders Sandown & Lake won 3-1 away at Pan, after an early goal from Alex Breingan. Rowenn Churchill added 2 more and received a yellow card, alongside Tom Sleight in a tough battle at Clatterford Rec.

Ryde Saints narrowly won 2-1 away at Seaview, with a consolation goal from Brandon Smith.

Shanklin Res drew 1-1 at the County Ground, against Ventnor Reserves, Charalambous Panayi was on target for Shanklin, who saw Sam Millis and Ben Wraxton booked.

Wessex

More than 200 spectators saw East Cowes Vics draw 4-4 at home to Hythe & Dibden in the Premier Division, with first-half goals from Jake Scrimshaw and Liam Triggs in injury time. After the break, Josh Neale added a third, and Elliott Wheeler added at injury time fourth to share the points. Before kick off player-of-the-match Jordan Chapman was presented an award in recognition of 250 appearance for the club.

Newport’s match was postponed due to the condition of the pitch, and Cowes didn’t have a fixture.
