COUNCILLOR PROFILE: Cllr Jock Rafferty – Cowes North – Labour – jock.rafferty@iow.gov.uk

I am deeply honoured that the people of Cowes North have elected me to represent our community on the IW Council. After countless doorstep conversations during the local election campaign, I am wasting no time. I am getting straight to work on the issues that matter most to you.

My top priority is tackling the Floating Bridge disaster. This service currently drains £1 million extra each year in lost revenue and running costs. I will immediately push for an independent review of replacement options. We deserve a service that is reliable, frequent, and financially sustainable.

Equally urgent is fixing our cross-Solent transport links. I am fully backing Richard Quigley MP’s campaign for affordable, reliable ferry services. With the UK Emissions Trading Scheme levy arriving this July, operators warn fares could rise. Alongside the new Cross-Solent Transport Board, I will use my council seat to fight these hikes and demand meaningful reform.

Our community also needs structural support. I am pressing the Council to end the use of expensive, unsuitable temporary accommodation. We must build genuinely affordable social homes. Furthermore, I will fight for better access to NHS services, consistent funding for care providers, and stronger support for our local domiciliary care workers. Finally, we must invest heavily in youth facilities and local jobs so our young people can build their futures right here.

I believe in absolute transparency. I promise to publish a plain-English update after every full council meeting. Thank you for your trust. The work starts now.
