COUNCILLOR PROFILE: Cllr James Whelan – Central Rural – Reform UK – james.whelan@iow.gov.uk

I am honoured to have been elected leader of the Reform UK group within the Isle of Wight Council. I want to thank my fellow councillors for the confidence they have placed in me, and above all the residents who voted for change and stronger local representation.

This result reflects a growing feeling across the Island that people want politics to return to common sense, accountability, and putting residents first. Too many feel ignored while costs rise, services decline, and confidence in decision‑making weakens. Our group intends to challenge that culture.

My priority is to provide constructive opposition, robust scrutiny, and practical solutions that deliver value for taxpayers, and better outcomes for residents. We will support policies that genuinely benefit the Island.

As the largest group on the council, it is important that we work constructively with councillors from all political backgrounds where there is shared ambition to improve life for Islanders. Residents expect elected members to focus on outcomes, not point‑scoring, and to ensure the council delivers effective and accountable local government.

We want to work positively with fellow councillors, officers, community groups, businesses, farmers, and residents, to help build a more efficient, transparent, and forward‑thinking council. The Island has enormous potential, and we need leadership willing to make difficult decisions, challenge waste, and back local people and enterprise.

The election may be over, but the real work begins now. I am committed to listening to residents across the Island and ensuring their voices are heard clearly inside County Hall.
