Newport faces almost six months of traffic disruption as Island Roads prepare for a major maintenance scheme to replace key structural components on the Medina Way Bridge in Newport.
Scheduled to start in mid-September and last until the end of February, the project involves replacing 16 bridge bearings with the bridge deck jacked up and supported as each bearing is replaced.
The work is planned outside the main tourism season but is bound to cause chaos until motorists settle into diverted routes. Little London and Newport Quay will be closed as through routes to accommodate the temporary support for the structure.
Traffic will be able to access the Quay via Fairlee Road and Seaclose, while Little London’s businesses will remain accessible via the existing one-way road, which will become temporary two-way by the Bargeman’s Rest.
Pedestrian and cycle access to Little London and Newport Quay will be maintained throughout the project.
Project manager Luke Ward stated: “Medina bridge, a three-span structure spanning a total length of 54m, is the largest highway’s structure we manage. It is heavily used, so we must balance safe maintenance with the impact on road users and businesses.
“We have already started discussions with local businesses and event organisers, whose cooperation is greatly appreciated. We will provide more details as plans progress.”
