Bembridge Lifeboat launches into thick fog to search for yacht

The Bembridge RNLI All Weather Lifeboat was launched to locate the source of a distress alert last night (Wednesday).

RNLB Alfred Albert Williams (Tamar All-Weather Lifeboat 16-17) was launched at 22:20 last night at the request of Solent Coastguard to help locate the source of a 406ghz EPIRB distress alert that had been received at 21:53 from a US registered 14m sailing yacht the ‘Otra Vez’.

Visibility was very poor so progress to the position 2nm east of Seaview which had been received in the automated distress alert was quite slow.

However just before starting an expanding box search, Solent CG advised that they had located the ‘Otra Vez’ in Cowes and that the alert had been confirmed as a false alarm.

The Alfred Albert Williams therefore returned to the Offshore Boathouse and was recovered by 23:30.
