What a difference a day makes – this week’s football report

This week saw Shanklin’s Rory Day maintain his fine form with a well-taken hat-trick, Brading’s Aaron Bennett hit 5, Shanklin’s Thea Broadhead netted 3, and Jordan Flynn got 3 for West Wight. There were well-earned Wessex wins for Cowes and Newport, and Hants Invitation Cup success for Wight Eagles and Shanklin Ladies.

Island Leagues One and Two

Three goals from Rory Day helped Shanklin win 6-1 away at Oakfield, with 2 goals from Josh Field and 1 from Alfie Flux, and a pitch-length ‘assist’ from Shanklin keeper, Ash Goldsmith.

West Wight maintained their lead at the top of Division One, with a floodlit 3-1 win away at Cowes Reserves. First half goals came from Chris Elliott and Brad Thomas, and Casey Tyrell netted the third in the last minute of the match.

Whitecroft & Barton remain second after winning 7-1 at home to Ventnor, with a hat-trick from sub, Harry Green, 2 from Sam Cant, and 1 apiece from Fin Kalaker and Aidan Sainsbury. Ventnor’s Emerson Tattersall scored in the first half.

Five goals from Aaron Bennett helped Brading win 12-1 at home to Osborne Coburg. Sub Jack Dyer, Scott Lawson and Mitchell Walker added 2 each, and Caleb Dyer completed the scoring, with a determined Osborne side scoring through James Taylor.

High Park won 3-2 away at Northwood, with goals from Scott Saunders (2) and John Robjant.

In Division Two, East Cowes Sports won 4-1 at home to Ryde Saints, with first-half goals from Blake Reeves and Aiden Jones, with subs, Andy Ebbs and Josh Richardson, scoring in the last 20 minutes.

Newchurch drew 1-1 at home to Pan, with Luke Warde scoring for ‘Church, and Ollie Watt equalising for the visitors.

Sandown & Lake won 5-2 away at Newport Reserves, with 2 goals apiece from Ethan Dicker and Shay Dixon, and sub, Louis Day, adding the fifth. Rob Iley picked up a caution, and Ash Gulliver got both ‘Port goals.

Binstead COB won 7-1 away at Seaview, with Luke Barker scoring for Seaview. COB’s Paul Dodd (3), player-of-the-match James Milligan (2), Cian McGee and Zak Sullivan were on target to claim the win.

Island Combinations One and Two and Cup

In the Junior A Cup, Brading Town Reserves overcame a stoic Shanklin side at the County Ground 3-0, with first-half goals from Jack Williams and Chris Murray, and a second-half penalty from keeper, Jamie Linington.

East Cowes Vics Res won 4-0 away at Ventnor Res, with goals from Travis Pitman, Ollie Hartnell, James Cheek and Ollie Sweatman.

West Wight Res won their Combination clash 9-0 at home to Oakfield Res, with a hat-trick from Jordan Flynn, 2 each from Reece Galloway and sub, Taylor Simmonds, and 1 apiece from Felix Gordon and Billy Pelosi.

Luke Bennett’s goal secured an away 1-1 draw, for leaders W&B at High Park Res.

Tayler Holmes (3) and Arthur Bradbury made it 4-2 for East Cowes Sports Res away at Osborne Coburg Res, with consolation goals from Isheanesu Goredema and Jesuojie Abhulimhen-Iyoha.

Sandown & Lake Res lost 3-1 at home to Bembridge & Vectis Res, with Lewis Parker-Meadows, Adam Clark and Bobbie Wye on target for the visitors, and Phil Shuro scoring for Sandown.

In Combination Two, Oakfield A won 3-2 at home to Sandown & Lake A, with consolation strikes from Josh Flux and Chris Davidson, after Dan Warboyes got cautioned for the visitors.

Unbeaten second-placed Binstead COB Res won 1-0 at home to West Wight A, with Matt Walker scoring the winner.

Bembridge & Vectis A won 5-1 at home to Ventnor A, with Brad Verstraeten scoring for Ventnor.

High Park A won 13-0 at Ryde Saints Res.

Wessex

Cowes won 1-0 away at Wincanton in the premier Division, with Rowen Cruttenden heading the winner in the first half, after a goal keeping error.

East Cowes Vics lost 4-1 at home to Sherborne Town, with the consolation strike from Connor Kelly in the first half.
In Division One, Newport maintain momentum with a 3-2 home win against Frimley Green, with goals from the 3 J’s (Ji Nash, Jez Conway and Joe Butcher), with the sixth win of the season finding ‘Port in eighth place, with games in hand over the teams above them.

Women’s Invitation Cup

In the Wessex Invitation Cup, Shanklin Ladies won 4-0 at home to Winchester Flyers, in the first round, with a hat-trick from Thea Broadhead and Gemma Woodford ensuring the Island side is in the second round draw.

Wight Eagles also progress after winning their home cup-tie against Havant & Waterlooville 4-2, coming from a goal behind at the break. 2 goals each from player-of-the-match, Annie Joseph-White and Kira Smith, sealed victory, and sparked celebration from debutant Mia Richardson and the team.
