VECTIS VIEW: Danielle Nixon – Mountbatten Community Team Nurse

By Press Release May 5, 2023

I feel very privileged to be a Mountbatten nurse, and it feels even more special knowing I can do this job with the backing of our Island community.

Walk the Wight takes place next week (Sunday, May 14) and it’s no secret this event raises a substantial amount of money for us. By taking part and fundraising for Mountbatten, you are helping us be there for Island people when they need us most. For me and my colleagues across all our teams, that feels incredibly powerful.

Often people don’t realise the breadth of work we do, both in our hospice building and in the community. Hospices are commonly thought of as places where people just go to die, not realising we do so much to help them live. We provide special rehabilitation programmes and activities to support people to maintain a good quality of life for as long as possible.

There is so much happening at Mountbatten every day, with concerts and events and our café all open to the public, which together create a very special atmosphere. Ask anyone who has been to Mountbatten and I’m sure they will say the same.

Offering kindness and providing individual care, whether it’s at the hospice or in peoples’ homes 24 hours a day, is a very special part of the work we do. I feel that is why we have such an unique connection with our community. We currently provide free care and support to over 2,000 people in any one day, and we are reaching more who need us on the Island all the time. By being part of Walk the Wight, you are helping us to keep providing these services.

With the rise in energy costs, increasing financial pressures and a growing number of people who need us, we must raise £11½ million every year. About a third of our funding comes from the NHS, but the rest is through fund-raised income from our amazing community. Walk the Wight is our flagship fund-raising event. We are expecting thousands of people to be part of it again this year, all walking for our cause. It’s a huge event to organise but the rewards of bringing people together for Mountbatten are worth it all.

There is still time to sign up on-line via Mountbatten’s website, and even if you leave it until the very last minute, you can sign up on the day too. If it is something you’ve always thought about doing, make it this year. Be part of something very special.

I feel very honoured to be a Mountbatten nurse and work within a committed, caring team which truly believes in making a difference through the services we offer. Not only do your fund-raising efforts support our work; they also inspire us and give us strength. We feel very proud to know our community is by our side.
On behalf of us all at Mountbatten, thank you.
