There were early wins for Ventnor in this week’s cricket

Ventnor enjoyed victories over Fair Oak and Ryde, ahead of the start of the new season.

Visitors, Fair Oak, totalled 147-9 from their 40 overs with Mark Holmes, George Watts, Ollie Morgan and Dan Cox taking two wickets apiece. Ventnor reached their target with two overs remaining for the loss of six wickets, Sam Mills with 42, and newcomer, Josh Carpenter (34 not out), were the top scorers.

Against Ryde, Ventnor amassed 258-7 in a 40-overs-a-side contest with Ryde. Mark Fletcher hit eight boundaries in a fine 76, while Kevin Cooper thumped a quick-fire 41 from just 14 deliveries, including six fours and two sixes. This was followed by Jack Powell with 41 and Ali Cotton (25 not out) which ensured their side set a challenging total.

Chris Russell (2-27) and new Aussie paceman, Ethan Short (1-16), made early inroads before Ryde steadied the ship with knocks of 43 from Tom Roscoe and 42 not out from Matt Webb. Despite their efforts, the home team won by 83 runs, with Ryde closing on 175-6.

This weekend, Ventnor are home to Sway (Friday 5.30pm), Preston (Saturday 12.30pm), Old Wilsonians (Arreton, Saturday 1pm), and Bircham (Sunday 1pm).
