Girlguiding Isle of Wight is a part of the largest voluntary organisation for girls and young women in the UK today.
Members are grouped by age into four sections: Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers. However, all female members of Girlguiding are often referred to using the generic term ‘Guides’.
On the Island there are more than 500 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers, plus adult leaders.
Units meet in most areas of the Island so there is always a unit nearby for those wishing to join.
Girlguiding enables girls and young women to get involved in a huge range of exciting activities. Members enjoy learning new skills including archery, climbing, camping and water sports, as well as computing, dance, cooking and craft, to name just a few. Challenges are undertaken and badges awarded.
There is also the opportunity for international trips, with Girlguiding active in 153 countries around the world, with several Island girls having been selected to represent the UK on international trips.
Girlguiding is passionate about helping girls and young women develop emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually, so that they can make a positive contribution to their community and the wider world. Members know that “girls can do anything.”
Within Island communities, members help other charities and often join in local events such as the IW County Show and carnivals. The environment plays an important part too, with girls litter-picking in towns and villages and on the beach, as well as planting new trees.
