Sunny Saints and Fourmidable Ventnor in this week’s football

Gary Rowett defends for Islanders

IW Legends 2 v Saints Legends 5

A full Westwood Park enjoyed Saints Legends, including Rickie Lambert, James Beattie, and skipper, Matt Oatley, facing a representative Island side, captained by Andy Butler, with the match dedicated to the late Graham Daish.

Saints opened the scoring through a Brian Howard chip and Shane Long header, before Ashley Wright pulled one back for the home side before half-time.

The second half saw Joe Tessem make 3-1, before Island manager, Tom McInnes, made it 3-2. Nicky Bangers’ spot kick, awarded by ref, Jamie Linington, extending Saints lead to 4-2.

With the match played in good spirits, Banger made it 5-2 at the final whistle. The crowd went home highly entertained, and glad to see Gary Rowett returning to the Island after 30 years, to help Newport FC’s fund-raising efforts.

Fourmidable Ventnor

Ventnor finished the season 4-1 winners of the Memorial Cup, beating High Park, scoring with a Charlie Urry hat-trick and Martin Barrow strike.

High Park’s consolation goal came in the first half through Nathan Holton, but the scoreline doesn’t reflect how close the match was in the early stages, with injuries hampering a fightback.
