Vibrant Ventnor’s vintage victory in cricket this week

Northwood batting on St Helens Green

With wickets still rain-affected, Island cricket returned to Smallbrook, and the Green at St Helens, with additional teams adding to the depth of Island cricket.

Hampshire Leagues

With Ventnor’s clash with Calmore Sports called off, Ventnor 2nd XI began their Hampshire League Division Three campaign, by beating Ellingham by 9 wickets at Steephill with a vintage performance.

George Watts, on his competitive Ventnor debut, took 5-9 and with teenager, Harrison McQuillan, chipping in with 3-28, the visitors were dismissed for just 73. The returning Sam Guerin hit five 6s and three 4s in a 26-ball half-century, as the home team romped to victory by 9 wickets inside 8 overs. Toby Noyes struck three boundaries in an unbeaten 20.

Also in Division Three, Shanklin & Godshill won by 9 wickets at Westhill, against Portsmouth & Southsea, with wickets for Nathan Moore (4), Harry Moore (3) and Jack White (2), limiting the visitors to 56 all out off 25 overs. In reply Jordan Langdon’s 39 not out saw Shanklin reach their target in the 9th over and remain league leaders.

Ryde 2nd XI won by 56 runs away at Solent Rangers, with opener, Tom Durman, and middle order, Tom Roscoe, both hitting 29 from a total of 178-5. Bowlers Nathan Day (3-15) and Tom Durman (3-17) reduced Solent to 122 all out.

Island Leagues

In Division One, St Helens won by 3 wickets at home to Northwood in the last over of the match. The visitors set 212-8, with opener, Callum Witham, scoring 50 and skipper, Nathan Goldsmith, an unbeaten 55, with Rob Holdcroft taking 4-25.

Batting second, St Helens’ wicket-keeper, Andy Deans, scored a match-winning 77 not-out, as they reached their target losing 7 wickets with 3 balls to spare from their 40 overs. Nigel Russell, Chris Williams and Callum Witham took 2 wickets each.

Ventnor 3rd XI, playing at home in Arreton, won by 5 wickets against Freshwater, who scored 119 all out. Highlights included wickie-skipper-opener, Graham Gosden, scoring 44, and Ventnor bowler, Manu Latha Mohan, taking 4-16.

Batting second, Ventnor opener, Ben Fry, hit 31, with Mark Price scoring 37 not out, as they reached 123-5. Freshwater’s Gary Freeston took 3-47 and Glen Bailey 2-21.

In Division Two at Smallbrook, Newport 2nd XI beat Shanklin 3rd XI by 172 runs, having scored 230-7 off 35 overs, with Aaron Hartup scoring 47. In reply Shanklin were skittled out for 58.

Northwood 2nd XI beat Ventnor 4th XI by 6 wickets, with Ventnor batting first. Opener, Mahesh Puttamadaiah, hit 32, Charles Andrew added 30, and Neil Redmond took 4-15 for Northwood. In reply, Northwood lost early wickets with Ventnor’s Oliver McQuillan taking 2-20, but Harry Cooksey’s 26 and Dave Pratt’s unbeaten 69 secured victory, with 7 overs left having lost just 4 wickets.

Sunday & Youth

Outstanding performances from Henry Bartlett (88) and Dan Cox (50) saw Ventnor reach the third round of the Voneus Village Cup. Visitors, Sarisbury Athletic, were limited to 165-8, due to off spinners, Henry Bartlett (2-30) and Dan Cox (3-35)
Thomas Southcott hit a fine half century as Ventnor Hurricanes totalled 175-2 in the U-15 Cup at Arreton. The home side responded with 113, Rafe Hawkins taking 3 wickets.

U-11s Chris Andrews top scored with 26 for Ventnor in their total of 113 against Arreton at Steephill. Belle Norris hit 24 in the village side’s 6-run win.

Fixtures

Ventnor 1 visit Old Tauntonians, Ryde 1 travel to Old Basing, Shanklin travel to Ellingham, Ventnor II visit Bashley, Ryde 2nd XI welcome Hursley Park.

Island sides play the Fred Winter Cup with Newport 2nd XI home to Ventnor 4th XI, and Northwood 2nd XI welcome Shanklin & Godshill 3rd XI.

In the Senior Cup Freshwater welcome Northwood, Shanklin & Godshill 2nd XI play St Helens, and Ventnor 3rd play Newport.
