Last Friday’s Merry and Bright – Festival of Light, curated by New Carnival, proved that wild weather could not dim the creativity of the Island or the strength of community spirit. With heavy rain, and gale‑force winds looming, organisers and partner venues pulled together to deliver a reimagined indoor festival.
Young people were at the heart of the action. A reduced lantern parade wound through the town, powered by RAW Samba and their dancers.
Families from St Helens, Wootton, and Barton primary schools proudly carried lanterns they had designed themselves, joined by East Cowes Carnival, New Carnival performers, volunteers and a determined crowd. Mayor of Ryde, Diana Conyers, led the way, but it was the children holding their lanterns aloft who stole the show.
As well as lanterns, the festival featured family crafts, a booked‑out Santa’s Grotto, glitter tattoos, and face painting. There were bands, including Abbey Brass and Double Take which added tradition for Christmas cheer.
Elsewhere, audiences enjoyed dance workshops, aerial performances, magic, circus acts, carols, and a bustling craft market. Decorations created by Newport’s youth provision, The Port, added to the festive atmosphere.
