New year – new purpose discover volunteering

by Sandy Ciccognani – Community Action

The start of a new year often inspires people to look for fresh purpose, positive change, and resolutions that genuinely make a difference. For anyone hoping to do something meaningful, in 2026, while supporting the community around them, the Island Volunteer Fair offers the perfect place to begin.

Hosted by Community Action Isle of Wight’s volunteer centre, the Island’s largest volunteer fair returns on Saturday, January 17, at the Riverside Centre, in Newport. Running from 11am to 3pm, the event is completely free to attend, and visitors are welcome to drop in at any time to browse, chat, and explore the many opportunities available.

The fair brings together an impressive range of charities, community groups, and public services, all ready to talk about the roles they offer.

Whether your interests lies in supporting young people, caring for animals, protecting the environment, preserving local heritage, or helping people through challenging times, there will be plenty to discover. Many organisations also offer roles that help volunteers build new skills, gain confidence, and meet new people, making volunteering as beneficial for the volunteer as it is for the community. Opportunities range from one-off events or a few hours a month to more regular commitments, making it easy to find something to fit in with your lifestyle.

More than 40 organisations have already confirmed their attendance, including Isle Access, Wessex Rivers Trust, Classic Boat Museum, Schoolreaders, English Heritage Trust, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, National Trust, Wetwheels Solent CIC, Home-Start Isle of Wight, The Wave Project, Samaritans IOW, Age UK Isle of Wight, Barnardo’s, Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary, Cats Protection, Wight Aviation Museum, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, Vectis Radio CIC, Brading Roman Villa, Carisbrooke Castle Museum, and Breakout Youth, with more expected to join in the run-up to the event.

The fair also welcomes local businesses. Employers offering staff volunteer or well-being days are encouraged to attend, and explore opportunities for team volunteering, which can strengthen workplace relationships and boost morale while supporting vital local causes.

For anyone hoping to make 2026 a year of connection, kindness, and community spirit, the Island Volunteer Fair is an inspiring place to start.
