Investigation into baby Jayla’s death is ongoing

Jayla-Jean Mclaren

Police have issued an update on the investigation into the death of one‑year‑old Jayla‑Jean McLaren, who died from a severe head injury on August 4 last year. A 31‑year‑old man and a 27‑year‑old woman, both from Newport, were arrested on suspicion of murder shortly after her death and were later released on conditional bail while enquiries continued. The inquest into Jayla‑Jean’s death was adjourned pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed today that both individuals remain under investigation for murder and have now been further arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child, as well as causing assault, ill‑treatment, neglect or abandonment of a child or young person in a way that could cause unnecessary suffering or injury. They are currently in police custody.

DCI Gemma Hunter described the case as “incredibly concerning and upsetting” and urged the public not to speculate, stressing that doing so could affect any future court proceedings. She said further updates would be provided when appropriate.
