Musical magic in Newport church

A recent evening of music, at St John’s Church in Newport, saw the church choir entertain with a ‘Magic of the Musicals’ summer concert.

Showcased talent from 22 choir members and accompanying band, Martin Dover (keyboard), Andrew Hallam (drums) and Joe Thompson (bass guitar). Songs performed ranged from the 1930s to 2010s. Led by director of music, Jo Dover, there were choral selections from classic shows such as Oliver and Les Miserables, with more modern pieces including Matilda (featuring chorister, Freya Jackson) and Defying Gravity from Wicked.

Individual members shone with duets from Chess, My Fair Lady, Chicago and Summertime. St John’s Hand Bell group performed Edelweiss, and more.

A three-part arrangement of Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina was sung by the ladies, before the gentlemen did a performance of Get Me To The Church On Time.

One highlight was special guests, Carisbrooke Primary School choir, directed by Luke Mulhern and Shirley Denne, singing Bad Guys from Bugsy Malone, an animated performance of I Just Can’t Wait to be King and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

The evening’s proceeds of £1,166 will be shared between the Wellow Unit at St Mary’s Hospital, St John’s Church and the church choir.
