The IW Monkey Haven’s Siamang gibbon, Xhabu, has died at the age of 19, prompting an outpouring of grief from staff and supporters.
Xhabu, one of the sanctuary’s first residents, was described as a “true icon” and a treasured member of the Monkey Haven family. Known for his distinctive call and gentle nature, Xhabu won the hearts of visitors and staff alike during nearly two decades at the wildlife rescue centre near Newport.
“He was so much more than a resident in our care – he was family,” a spokesman said. “His presence will always be felt at the sanctuary, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.”
Xhabu had been recovering from a stroke in recent years, but his health deteriorated, and he passed away peacefully this week.
The sanctuary also expressed sympathy for Xhabu’s gibbon companions – Bog, Kajan, and Bono – who are said to be feeling his absence deeply.
