Making a splash for charity

Around eighty brave souls, cheered on by a crowd of around 500, ventured into the not-so-warm waters of the English Channel in Shanklin today (January 1) to raise funds on behalf of the Wessex Cancer Trust.

Those in fancy dress included pirates and a pair of Santas. Others dressed in swimming costumes, but all dashed into the less-than-welcoming sea at Small Hope Beach.

The organisers have estimated that the event raised more than £1,000 for the Wessex Cancer Trust.
