Kayakers and bungee jumpers needed to support cancer charity

The group who swam for hope in 2023

Wessex Cancer Support runs an annual Swim for Hope event, to raise funds to support Islanders affected by cancer. Last year, 40 swimmers bravely swam from Hurst Castle to Colwell Bay, approximately 1¼ miles, and raised almost £60,000. With the 2024 swim already a sell out, Wessex Cancer Support is now on the hunt for safety kayakers and support boats for the event.

Laura Haytack, regional fund-raising manager, said: “These vital volunteers ensure the safety of all swimmers as they cross the Solent. Without them the event simply couldn’t go ahead, and we wouldn’t be able to raise this incredible amount of money.”

The Swim for Hope event will take place on Sunday, June 30, as long as the charity can find the vital support vessels.

The charity is also looking for brave volunteers to jump into spring with the Isle of Wight bungee-jump. Experience the thrill of a lifetime with an exhilarating 160ft bungee-jump.

Be a member of the first group ever of IW bungee-jumpers. Take a leap of faith with Wessex Cancer Support, free-falling back to earth in a brand-new experience you’ll never forget. You’ll also receive a medal upon completion of the challenge. Registration is £20, with a £200 minimum sponsorship target.
