IW Ultra Challenge raises charity funds

By Press Release May 5, 2023

More than 1,600 people took part in Saturday’s Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge, raising thousands of pounds for various charities.

The competitors could either run or walk one of the three courses which were over either 106km, 53km or 25km (66, 33 or 15½ miles).

An event spokesman said: “The 2023 Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge, what a weekend it’s been!

“Over 1,600 people taking on the Island – it’s been one of the toughest courses we’ve ever had, with mud, sunshine, wind and more! We want to congratulate all of our incredible challengers for taking it on and supporting each other throughout.”

One of the challengers was Royal Solent Yacht Club member, Philip Turner, 54, who did the walk in memory of his cousin, Polly Birch, who died of cancer, aged 32, in 2017, just three months after giving birth. He said: “Base camp was at Chale and I set off at 9am. I walked all day and through the night, returning to Chale at 4.30am.

“I crossed the finishing line both elated, tired and with sore feet after walking for 19 hours and 32 minutes – and using eight pairs of socks!

“Polly’s Fund was set up to offer a special opportunity to Isle of Wight children to apply for a five-day sailing or water sports course during their summer holidays for just £20, enabling them to have fun, be adventurous and learn new skills through participation in outdoor activities.

“I have managed to raise nearly £4,000 to date from this walk and £26,000 in total over the last couple of years which has allowed Isle of Wight children to have a fun week on the water.”
