Is this the moment the Tarvic 2 fire started?

A video and photograph appears to show the early stages of the Tarvic 2 hotel fire.

Metadata from the video says it was shot at 10.52am on Sunday (September 2), eight minutes before the fire was reported.

It appears to show flames erupting from behind a pile of chairs and mattresses between two brick walls belonging to the Tarvic 2 Hotel in Culver Parade.

Tourist Tania Gordon shot the footage whilst driving with her family and posted a still image from it to Facebook group Isle of Wight Community Information, attempting to raise the alarm to those in the area.

Mrs Gordon said: “We’d just left the Driftwood Cafe and parked on other side of the cafe and there was nothing.

“Then we turned around at Yaverland car park and drove back down and there was a small amount of smoke like a barbecue – then all of a sudden it went ‘woosh’ and took off as we slowed to see what it was.

“I left quick as it was right by our car and I had the kids with me.”

No one was injured in the fire that around 50 Firefighters tackled on September 2.

The cause of the blaze is unknown with fire investigators visiting the site on Monday morning (September 3) to establish the origin.
