Bruising Hurries defence hold firm.

Sandown & Shanklin Hurricanes have consolidated their lead at the top of Counties Two with a convincing 55-3 win at home to Locksheath Pumas. They played in front of an expectant crowd at the Fairway, with Michael Barrett and Jacob Jordan strong in the tackle and Harvey Kirkby and Anthony Burr combining at scrum- and fly-half. The visitors were unable to cope with the power of Luke and Jack Wedderkopp, or the running of George Finan and full-back, Ashley Smith.

The Hurricanes have won 14 of their 15 matches, and are on course to score over 1,000 points this season. Their lead over 2nd-placed Basingstoke is now at 9 points, having played one game more.

On Saturday IW travel to Alresford in Counties 3, with Ventnor at Havant III in a re-arranged match. Next weekend sees the Hurries travelling to 3rd-placed Guernsey II, in what is shaping up to be a title decider.

This weekend’s Six Nations sees the officiating debut of Islander, Adam Leal, from Ryde, who has been appointed assistant referee in the Italy v Scotland match in Rome, which can be seen on ITV. Ventnorian, Emile Bleriot, has been selected for the Hampshire County squad.
