Teams and individuals are invited to take part in a celebration of rural tradition, at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway at Havenstreet, when it hosts the Wight nature fund Autumn Hedgelaying Competition, on November 14.
The charity is organising the event for a second year, after hundreds of spectators enjoyed late autumn sunshine at the 2025 competition.
Competitors will lay and secure a 10‑metre (33ft) length of hedge within the time limit. The contest will be divided into Open, Novice and Team categories, with additional trophies for the best hedge-laid using hand tools only, and the best stakes and binding.
Entry is free for both competitors and spectators, with parking available at the station. Havenstreet is now served by Southern Vectis, offering a sustainable travel option for visitors. Spectators are welcome on site from 10am, with the attraction’s café open for food and drink, and stands demonstrating traditional crafts throughout the day.
Entries for the competition are now open, and will close on Friday, November 13. Last year’s event saw Tom Murphy take home the ‘Open’ class trophy, while Andy Toms claimed the ‘Novice’ award.
Trustee, Thomas Cowley, said: “The benefits of hedgelaying are numerous and it complements the Isle of Wight’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status. It is a fantastic day out, for both competitors and spectators who are interested in learning more about this vital rural craft!”
Entry forms can be found at wnf.org.uk, or via the charity’s Facebook and Instagram pages.
