Wessex Cancer Support is making waves on the Island this summer, with the launch of its very first Dragon boat race, set to take place at Island Harbour on Saturday, August 30.
The charity event invites local businesses, community groups, friends, and families to form teams and compete in high energy heats for a place in the grand final. Each boat will be crewed by 10 rowers and a drummer, with team entry costing £330 and a fund-raising target of £1,100.
“We’re really excited to bring this dynamic and fun event to the Island,” said Laura Haytack, Wessex Cancer Support’s fund-raising manager for the Island. “Whether you’re new to dragon boating or an experienced paddler, this is a fantastic opportunity to support a great cause and enjoy a brilliant day on the water.”
Funds raised will help the charity continue its vital work, providing emotional and wellbeing support to Islanders affected by cancer. Services are offered at Wessex’s Newport centre, and across the region, through counselling, therapies, groups, and its much valued Daisy bus service.
