A revival for Newport’s High Street

90 High Street Newport

A partnership between Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council (N&CCC) and the IW Council has delivered a fresh new look to Newport’s historic High Street.

Thanks to targeted planning enforcement, supported by community council funding, more than 50 untidy and neglected buildings across Carisbrooke and Newport High Streets have been assessed, with 39 now visibly improved through remedial works. A growing number of property owners are also stepping up independently, restoring buildings without the need for council intervention.

The initiative is part of the IW Council’s planning enforcement strategy, which allows local councils to contribute financially toward additional enforcement in their area.

Cllr Vix Lowthion, chairman of N&CCC, said: “Visitors and residents alike have commented on how much better the town looks. This success reflects the strong partnership between our council and the IW Council. It’s certainly money well spent.”

Other parish and town councils including Lake, Ryde, and Sandown are already funding similar schemes. Councils interested in joining the initiative are encouraged to contact the IW Council’s enforcement team at enforcement.team@iow.gov.uk.
