Competition hot in table tennis Winter League

Alex Rorke - Ryde B - Division One

by Debbie Yates

The Winter League is proving interesting already, with the three divisions all dominated by teams from different parts of the Island at this stage.

Division One

Havenstreet A 3 v Ryde A 7, Ryde 2 v 2 Ryde C 8, Ryde Rankers 9 v Ryde Revellers 1.

Division One continues to be dominated by Ryde teams, with Havenstreet A slipping to third place after their 7-3 defeat to Ryde A, with Scott Lawson and Mark Turner undefeated for Ryde.

Ryde C made short work of Ryde B, with the B team’s Alex Rorke’s scoring their only wins, as the C team took the match 8-2.

Ryde Rankers enjoyed a 9-1 thrashing of newly-promoted Ryde Revellers, with the Revellers’ Gourav Shah winning their sole point, with a victory over Elaine Mills, although Spike Hughes was unlucky losing to Mills in five sets.

Ryde C head the table with Ryde A in second and Havenstreet in third.

Division Two

Ryde Rogues 0 v Newport Vics A 10, Ryde Rovers 2 v Havenstreet B 8, Newport Vics B v 7 Shorwell Sinners 3.

Newport Vics A and B teams are lying in first and second place respectively.

Vics A had an easy win over Ryde Rogues, taking the match 10-0, with Vics’ Rob Warren player of the match.

Vics B had a harder match against Shorwell Sinners, with many games going to the full five sets, meaning a late night finish for the two teams.

Shorwell’s Guy Golbourne had the hardest night of all, with his games all going to the final set, and ultimately Golbourne won two, losing only to Vics’ Paul Lewis. Lewis, and team-mate, Michael Jose, teamed up in the doubles against Shorwell’s Robert Wendes and Peter Burger in another tight five set game. The score ended 7-3 to Newport Vics B.

Havenstreet B had a good win over Ryde Rovers 8-2, with Havenstreet’s Dave Rendle unbeaten.

Division Three

Shorwell Saints 4 v Shorwell Saviours 6, Wroxall Warriors B 7 v Ryde Oddballs 3, Wroxall Warriors C 1 v Wroxall Legendary Lizards 9, Ryde Raiders 1 v Cowes Baptists 9, Newport Vics C 3 v Wroxall A 7.

Wroxall is dominating Division Three, with their A and B teams lying in first and second place at present, with another village team, Shorwell Saviours, lying in third.

Wroxall A made short work of Newport Vics C, who were relegated from Division Two last season, and were expected to be in the promotion battle. Wroxall’s Andrew Bailey was unbeaten, whilst team-mate, Jon Steele, won two, and the match finished 7-3 to Wroxall.

The new team of Cowes Baptists also look like one to be reckoned with, as they won easily 9-1 against Ryde Raiders.
