A sale of important coastal and maritime paintings, watercolours and prints from 1770 to present day, by some of Great Britain’s leading artists, is taking place at Lisle Combe, Undercliff Drive, St Lawrence, on April 12 and 13 (See the advertisement with full details on page 20).

The show includes one of the largest Island watercolours by the late Cavendish Morton, of Bembridge, as well as fine paintings by Martyn Mackrill, Martin Swan, Ryde artist Arthur Wellington Fowles, together with works by a further fifteen of the Island’s leading contemporary painters. Also for sale are a selection of important IW topographical books from the 18th and 19th centuries and exceptionally fine wood carvings by Vlasta Turjanicova.

The exhibition, which has been arranged by Professor Robin McInnes, is taking place at the historic Cottage Orne marine villa, Lisle Combe, situated on the seaward side of Undercliff Drive, 600 metres (1968ft) west of the entrance to Ventnor Botanic Garden. Lisle Combe was the former home of the celebrated author and poet, Alfred Noyes (1880-1958), and the exhibition is taking place there with kind permission of Mr and Mrs Robert Noyes.

Lisle Combe was built in 1839 for Captain Dudley Pelham, who was second son of Charles Anderson-Pelham, 1st Earl of Yarborough, who owned the Marine Villa (next to Lisle Combe) as well as Appuldurcombe House, at Wroxall. Earl Yarborough was a founder and First Commodore of the Royal Yacht Squadron.

The picture sale is open from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free. Signposted on Undercliff Drive, PO38 1UW.
