The multi record-breaking Thunder Child II caused quite a shockwave when it moored up in Cowes last Friday.
It brought admiring looks from the locals, who were lucky enough to be near Trinity Landing at the time.
Thunder Child II is owned and piloted by Nick Ogden, founder of Worldpay, and dubbed the “inventor of e-Commerce” and “Godfather of Fintech”.
Nick was passing the Island on his way to Jersey but stopped off to catch up with his solicitors, Michael Coyle and Mark Reed, of Lawdit Solicitors in Newport.
Michael said: “It is always good to see Nick; he is a good man and client, so it was great that he chose to pop in and see us.”
Mark added: “Nick is a legend, and such an interesting man. We had a few hours with him to go through several things.
“I also like boats and sailing, so we were able to exchange stories, and he walked us around his incredible vessel and introduced us to the amazing crew before we had lunch.”
Thunder Child II is a 22-metre (72ft) high-speed pleasure boat, which has already achieved six world records (ratified by the UIM, the International Governing Body of Powerboating Sport). It has a top speed of 54 knots, which is also the name its operating crew are known by.
She has an innovative hull, which fuses an asymmetrical catamaran with a wave- piercing monohull, meaning she remains stable while cutting through waves and can operate in Force 10 storms. She is powered by four 650HP engines.
The team use their record attempts to collect vital data for work on developing seawater-based fuel cell systems, and also to raise money for various charities.
