Members of Freshwater Bay WI (FBWI) have said thank you – with cake – to show their appreciation of the fire crews who battled so hard to save Headon Warren in July.
The ladies drew up a rota of baked goodies for the Freshwater fire crews’ weekly practice meeting in the village, every week for a month.
Terry Butchers, of FBWI, organised the gesture and made sure the three weekly cakes were all different, and the fire crews made sure not a crumb went to waste.
The blaze, which raged for five days, destroyed some 22 acres of National Trust land, and involved not only Island fire crews but extra back up from the mainland, and a helicopter which dropped water in inaccessible areas.
Fire crews from Freshwater were among the staff who worked day and night to try to stop the blaze spreading. Local farmers had helped emergency services by using their tractors to create fire breaks.
Mrs Butchers, whose grandson works for the fire service, said: “We just wanted to show we appreciate all the time they spent trying to save one of our local beauty spots. And we knew they all loved cake, so the answer was simple.”
